Stringed Theory
Support & FAQ
Getting started
Allow microphone access, choose your instrument’s preset, and play a string. Pick Digital, Analog, or Strobe for single-string tuning, or Poly for readings across multiple strings. For a steadier result, let the note ring and mute strings you are not tuning.
The tuner cannot hear my instrument
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. On Mac, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Enable Stringed Theory, then reopen the app. On Mac, also check the selected input in System Settings → Sound → Input. Lower Noise Gate if quiet notes are being ignored.
How do I tune down to E♭ or D?
Choose Standard and set Virtual Capo to −1 for E♭ standard or −2 for D standard. The control shifts every string; for Drop D, choose the Drop D preset instead. Set it back to 0 to return to the original preset. E♭ may be displayed as D♯; they are the same pitch in this tuner.
What do the input settings do?
Input Sustain keeps fading notes readable. Noise Gate filters quiet background noise. Concert A changes the pitch reference; 440 Hz is the default.
Can I create or remove a tuning?
Open Settings → Tunings to create, edit, or delete a preset. Restore Built-In Presets adds missing built-ins without changing saved tunings. Custom targets can be entered from 30 to 1,200 Hz; very low or high transpositions can fall outside the detector’s supported range.
How do I move, resize, or quit on Mac?
Drag the grip at the top to move the window. Drag an edge or corner to resize it. The red × button quits the app. Poly mode’s string list can scroll.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone and iPad with iOS/iPadOS 17 or later, and Mac with macOS 15 or later. Live tuning requires a microphone. Audio analysis works without an internet connection; opening support or privacy pages uses your browser.
Where is my data?
Presets and preferences stay on your device. The app does not provide its own cloud sync or account. See the Privacy Policy for microphone controls, local storage, and deletion choices.
