Your first job in 10 minutes
This is the whole app in one pass. Every step has its own detailed section further down.
-
Make a job
Tap New Job, enter a Job Name (that's the only required field), and add the address and contact if you have them. Tap Create. Floored adds a floor called Main Floor automatically.
Not ready to commit? Tap Try a Sample Job on the opening screen for a finished blueprint to poke at. It doesn't count against your free job limit.
-
Add a room
Tap the big blue + button at the bottom-right and pick how you want to start: Scan Room with LiDAR, Draw Room Manually, or one of the starter shapes like 12' × 12' Square.
-
Get the walls right
In the room editor, tap any wall to select it, type the real measurement, and press Return. Work your way around the room. Tap Snap to keep corners square.
-
Fill out the checklist
Tap the Checklist button, name the room, pick a Material, and note anything the installer needs — shoe molding, pad, squeaks, doors to cut. Tap Done, then Save.
-
Set up your material
Back on the floor plan, open Materials and tap +. Name it, choose the Type first, then set the roll width or piece size. For carpet with a pattern, enter the Pattern Length and Pattern Width — that's what pays for the pattern match.
-
Check the numbers
Open Job Summary. The Material Estimates section gives you square yards and the linear feet to order for each product. The Carpet Cuts tab is your cut sheet.
-
Print the packet
Tap the printer button, choose which sections to include, and tap Print. To get a PDF instead of paper, pick Save as PDF in the print dialog that appears.
Finding your way around
The help button
The ? button turns on Help Mode. While it's on, tapping any button explains what that button does instead of running it. It's the fastest way to learn a screen — and the first time you create a job, Floored turns it on for you.
Getting around the canvas
- Pinch to zoom, drag empty space to pan.
- Tap to select before you drag. Rooms, stairs, walls, and corners all need to be selected first — otherwise your drag just pans the canvas. This trips up almost everyone at first.
- Tap empty background to deselect.
- Zoomed way out, the plan switches to Overview and hides names, areas, and measurements. Zoom back in and they return — nothing is lost.
Undo
Undo and redo buttons appear in the room editor's bottom toolbar, and in the top-left of the floor plan once there's something to undo. Floor plan history clears when you switch floors.
Saving
Jobs autosave — there's no Save button and no way to lose a job by forgetting. The room and stair editors are the exception: they have Save and Cancel, and cancelling discards that editing session, including photos you added in it.
Mac and iPad
Everything works the same, with two differences: right-click on a Mac wherever this guide says long-press, and on Mac and full-screen iPad the editors open in the side pane instead of taking over the screen. On iPhone, the toolbar buttons collapse into a ••• menu.
Jobs
A job holds everything for one address: floors, rooms, stairs, materials, photos, and notes.
What you can fill in
- Job Name — required, everything else is optional.
- Address — or tap Use Current Location to fill it from GPS while you're standing in the driveway.
- Decorator/Salesperson, Phone Number, Email.
- Job Notes — anything that isn't about one specific room.
- Measurement Units — leave Use Settings Default on unless this one job needs different units than the rest of the app.
- Wall Settings — wall thickness, 6″ by default. It affects how walls draw and the door-jamb allowance on carpet cuts, not room areas.
Finding and filing jobs
Search matches job name, address, and decorator. The Active / Archived picker switches which list you're looking at — long-press a job to Archive it when the work is done.
Floors
The pill bar along the bottom of the floor plan is your floor switcher. Tap a pill to switch; tap + to add a floor.
- Floors are named by level, not by typing: Basement, Main Floor, 2nd Floor, and so on. "Rename" means "change which level this is," and levels already in use are greyed out.
- Long-press a floor pill for Rename, Exclude from Estimate (handy for a floor you're bidding separately), clearing its contents, or Delete Floor. Deleting a floor that has rooms offers to move them somewhere else first.
- Floored remembers which floor you were on per job.
Stairs between floors
A stair set to connect up or down shows up as a dashed teal ghost on the neighbouring floor, so you can see where it lands. The ghost is just a reference — the stair is only counted once, on its own floor.
Getting a room on the page
Four ways, all from the blue + button. Pick whichever suits the room in front of you.
1. Scan it with LiDAR
Scan Room with LiDAR (iPhone/iPad with LiDAR only). Walk the room slowly, wall to wall, corner to corner. Floored counts walls, doors, windows, and objects as it goes. Tap Finish Scan.
You get a Ready to Import card with the outline. Before importing:
- Use 90° Left / 90° Right to spin the room to the orientation you want. Scans usually come in rotated — that's normal, not a bug.
- Tap a corner to nudge it with the arrow buttons.
- Leave the Outline picker on Auto unless the shape looks wrong; Floor and Walls are alternate readings of the same scan.
Tap Import & Edit and the room opens in the editor. It brings in the outline, doors, windows, passages, and built-in obstructions like cabinets and islands. Furniture — beds, sofas, chairs, tables, TVs — is ignored on purpose.
2. Draw it by hand
Draw Room Manually puts you in Draw mode: tap each corner in order. When you've got at least three corners, tap the first corner again — or the Close button — to close the shape. Then correct the wall lengths in Edit mode.
3. Traverse — measure as you walk
This is the fastest method for an odd-shaped room, and the one worth learning. Tap Traverse, then for each wall: type the length, set Left or Right for which way you turn next, and tap ✓.
- The ← and → arrow keys set turn direction if you have a keyboard.
- Not a square corner? Type the angle and pick a turn direction, or use 2-Shot to build an angled wall from two measurements.
- Previous and Next walk you back through the walls to fix a number.
- Close finishes the shape.
4. Start from a shape
12' × 12' Square, 4' × 20' Hall, L-Shaped Room, and 3' × 5' Closet drop in a closed shape you resize. Good for closets and halls where drawing is more work than typing.
New rooms are placed clear of existing ones, so nothing lands on top of anything. Select a room and drag to arrange the floor — rooms with doors snap to line up doorways.
Shaping the room
Everything here happens in Edit mode, once the room is closed.
Setting a wall length
Tap the wall (not its dimension label). The Wall Length panel appears — type the measurement and press Return. Green "Accepted" text confirms it.
Locking walls you've confirmed
Tap Lock on a wall you've measured and are sure about. It shows a blue Locked badge and can't be changed by accident — and it constrains how neighbouring walls resize, which is what keeps a room from drifting as you dial in the rest. Unlock to edit again.
Corners
- Move one: tap the corner to select it, then drag.
- Add one: double-tap anywhere along a wall, or use the Add Point tool and tap a wall.
- Remove one: select it and tap Delete Corner.
- Snap keeps things square as you drag. Leave it on unless you're working a genuinely odd angle.
Bays, bumps, and curves
- Shape ▸ Fireplace (Inward) notches into the room; Dormer/Closet (Outward) bumps out. Pick one, then tap the wall it belongs on.
- Curve — tap the tool, tap a wall, then drag to set how much it bows. Drag outward or inward. Tapping alone does nothing; the drag is the control. Select a curved wall and tap Straight to flatten it.
Custom measurements
Measure adds a dimension line between any two points on the walls — good for documenting a diagonal or an opening width. Tap the first point, then the second. To remove one, tap it, then tap it again.
On the floor plan itself, the ruler button measures between any two points across rooms.
Whole-room moves
Select a room for its action bar: Duplicate Room, Straighten Room (forces near-square corners to 90°), Split Room, Rotate, Flip, and Delete Room. There's also Rotate Blueprint for the whole floor.
Doors, windows, islands & rugs
Doors and windows
Tap Door or Window, then tap the wall it's on. Set the distance from a corner — tap the corner chip to measure from the other end instead — and the width. Tap Place Door / Place Window. Tap any existing one to move, resize, or delete it.
Doors matter for more than looks: they drive the door-jamb allowance on carpet cuts and let rooms snap together at the doorway. Windows help with seam placement.
Islands and obstructions
Shape ▸ Island, then tap inside the room. Islands are anything the floor doesn't go under — a kitchen island, a hearth, a built-in. Tap an island wall to set its length; double-tap to add a corner; drag its corners like room corners.
Area rugs and insets
Tap Rug and set the Default Inset — how far the rug sits off the walls — with per-wall overrides if it isn't even all round. You get a live Rug Area, then tap Accept Rug.
The room checklist
The Checklist button in the room editor is where a room stops being a shape and becomes a line on the work order. It covers:
- Room Details — the room name and which floor it's on.
- Material — what's going down. Without this, the room shows a Needs Material badge and contributes nothing to your estimate.
- Material Layout — turn on Show Pattern Grid to preview plank or tile layout, set the Direction (0/45/90/135°) and pattern.
- Prep — substrate type and what's coming out.
- Transitions and Doors to Cut.
- Miscellaneous Add-ons — shoe molding, pad, subfloor, furniture to move, squeaks.
- Notes and Photos.
The pattern preview is exactly that — a preview. It shows the crew how it should run, but it does not change quantities. Waste for plank and tile comes from the material's Waste Factor.
Photos and notes
Add photos from the checklist, or long-press a room on the floor plan and choose Attach Picture. Photos and notes show as small badges on the room in the plan — tap one to open it. Every photo can have a caption.
Stairs
Add stairs from the blue + button ▸ Add Stairs. A staircase is built from sections in the order you walk them, bottom to top — the canvas marks START and TOP.
Section types
- Straight Run — set the number of Steps, the Width, and Tread + Riser.
- Pie Turn — winders. Set the number of pie steps, the turn angle (45/90/135/180°), direction, width, and the inner and outer radius.
- L-Landing — a landing with a turn. Entrance width, exit width, and the landing's overall size.
- U-Landing — a switchback landing, including the stairwell opening.
Coverage
In the Coverage panel, choose Wall-to-Wall or Runner. For a runner, either set a Fixed Width (with Centered, Left Butted, or Right Butted position) or a Wall Offset, which keeps the runner centered and lets its width follow each step.
Carpet direction
Each section has a Carpet Direction — Follow (the default, running down the stairs) or a fixed Up/Down/Left/Right. If a stripe or pattern has to keep running the same way through a turn, set it on one section and tap Apply to All.
Connecting floors
Set Floor Above or Floor Below so the staircase shows as a reference ghost on the connecting floor. Assign a material to the stair in the stair editor — note that Assign to All Rooms deliberately skips stairs, so they're easy to leave unpriced.
Materials
Open Materials from the floor plan toolbar and tap +. Materials belong to the job you're in — there's no shared library, so each job gets its own list.
What to fill in
- Name — the only required field. Use the style and color you'd put on a purchase order.
- Type — Carpet, Carpet Tiles, LVP, Ceramic, Vinyl, or Hardwood.
- Width (and Length for plank, tile, and hardwood) — tap a Common Roll Widths chip for the usual sizes: 12', 13', 15', 6', 16'4".
- Coverage per Box — optional, for boxed goods. Fill it in and the estimate tells you how many boxes to order; leave it blank and you order by area.
- Pattern Length and Pattern Width — carpet and vinyl only. This is the repeat, and it's what makes Floored add pattern-match allowance to the cuts. A patterned carpet entered without a repeat will estimate short.
- Layout Pattern and Waste Factor — plank/tile only. The waste factor (10% by default) is what drives the order; the layout choice is visual.
Roll specifications
With Show Advanced Roll Specifications on (Settings ▸ Materials), carpet and vinyl also get Waste per cut (3″ default), Width variance, and Selvedge per side. The editor shows the resulting Effective width — a 12' roll usually plans as about 11'11" once variance and selvedge come off. That's deliberate, and it's why seam math doesn't match a naive 12' assumption.
Assigning material
Three ways: per room in the room's Checklist, per stair in the stair editor, or all at once from the material's ••• menu ▸ Assign to All Rooms. Rooms without material show an orange Needs Material badge in the Job Summary.
Carpet: seams and nap
Floored plans broadloom the way an installer does — real cuts off a real roll — instead of multiplying area by a waste percentage. Open Seams in the room editor to see and steer the plan.
Nap direction sets everything
Nap Direction — Forward, Backward, Left, or Right — decides which way the carpet runs, and therefore how the room gets cut. Forward and Backward run the strips lengthwise; Left and Right run them across the room. Changing it re-plans every cut in that room, so set it before you fine-tune anything else. (Vinyl shows this as Roll Direction: Lengthwise or Widthwise, since vinyl has no nap.)
Where the seams fall
- Start From — which edge the first full strip starts against (Left/Right, or Top/Bottom for a widthwise run). Flipping it often changes where the fill strip lands.
- Add Seam adds one; drag the red seam line in the preview to move it. Reset returns to Floored's automatic layout.
- T-Seams — Off, Auto, or Manual, with a count. A T-seam pieces the fill strip so you can order less carpet; the panel shows what it saves. Manual lets you drag the orange line to put it somewhere the furniture will cover.
Reading the panel
Order Length is the number that matters — the linear feet this room needs. Below it, Strip Details breaks down each cut with its pattern-match and T-seam additions, and Remnants lists the usable drops. The Layout Options sheet compares alternative layouts side by side and shows what each one saves, so you can see whether a T-seam or a different start edge is worth it.
Floored handles the fiddly parts on its own: selvedge and width variance, pattern-match waste, door-jamb allowance, flipping nested pieces 180°, minimum usable remnant sizes, and packing fill pieces from several rooms onto shared stock.
Cut sheets and roll inventory
Job Summary ▸ Carpet Cuts is the sheet you hand the installer, grouped by material.
The two lists
- Room-Size Cuts — numbered cuts, each showing the room, the strip, and the cut size. Notes tell the cutter what's going on: "Pattern match included", "Door jamb allowance", "Cut to room shape", "Rotated 180° from plan", "Nap runs up stairs".
- Optimized Fill Cuts — leftover fill pieces from several rooms packed onto shared stock cuts, with a diagram of what goes where and how much of the stack is left open.
Tap the circle beside a cut to check it off as made. That's progress tracking only — it doesn't change any numbers.
Cutting from rolls you actually have
If you're cutting from specific rolls, add them under Roll Inventory in the material editor. Enter each roll's width and length in the order you'll cut them — Roll 1 first.
- Rolls are named by position. Reordering them renumbers them and changes the cutting sequence; the optional Label is just a note.
- Prefer sequential cuts takes cuts in order off the lowest-numbered roll with room. That keeps you closer to one dye run at the cost of a little more waste. Off, Floored packs for least waste instead.
- The Roll Allocation section shows what's assigned where, what's left on each roll, and flags anything that doesn't fit. You can pin a specific cut to a specific roll, and Mark Off Roll when a roll is used up.
If nothing fits your rolls, Floored re-plans with extra cross seams and says so. Read that warning carefully — the re-planned cut numbers don't match the list above it, and extra seams are an install tradeoff you may not want.
The job summary
Job Summary is where you sanity-check a bid before it goes out.
- Job Totals — total area, stair linear length, how many rooms need pad or subfloor.
- Material Estimates — per product. Broadloom shows square yards and the linear feet to order. Plank and tile show net area, area with waste, and box count if you entered box coverage.
- Broadloom Remnants — every usable drop, its size, and which room it came from.
- Per-floor breakdown — every room with its area, material, and any warnings, plus a count of rooms still needing material.
- Installation Checklist Summary and Room Notes — everything the crew flagged, gathered in one place.
Scan for orange Needs Material badges and Excluded floors before quoting — those are the two ways a total ends up smaller than reality.
Printing the packet
The printer button opens Print, where you choose what goes in:
- Work Order — job info, totals, materials, floor summary.
- Floor Blueprints — a scaled plan per floor with a room legend. Turn on Show Measurements to print dimensions on it (it's off by default).
- Room Pages — a page per room with its plan and details.
- Area Rug Pages — a page per rug with it highlighted.
- Cut Sheets — the carpet cuts, fill diagrams, and roll assignments.
Tap Print and Floored builds the whole packet as one PDF, then hands it to the standard print dialog. To save a PDF instead of printing, use that dialog's Save as PDF (Mac) or the share button (iPhone/iPad) — that's how you email a packet.
Using a laser measure
Floored takes readings over Bluetooth from Leica DISTO meters and common LDM/S60-class lasers (Huepar, Mileseey, Tacklife and similar).
Connect
In any measurement field — wall length, door, window, rug inset, stair sections — tap Connect Laser. Turn the meter on and put it in Bluetooth mode first. The status line walks from "Looking for laser" to "connected", and the last meter you used gets found first next time.
Tap the field you want to fill
The reading lands in whichever field has focus.
Shoot
Press the measure button on the laser itself. The measurement drops straight into the field.
If it won't connect: check Bluetooth is on and allowed for Floored, wake the meter, and make sure it isn't still paired to another phone. Locked fields won't accept a reading.
Settings worth knowing
Five tabs: General, Display, Materials, Account, Support.
General
- Display Unit — Imperial or Metric, and whether to show lengths as inches only.
- Round Lengths To — down to 1/32″. This affects what's shown on screen; cut sheets and seam tickets keep their own full precision.
- Default Wall Thickness — 4/5/6/8″, overridable per job.
- Forced Checklist on Room Completion — on by default (see the checklist section).
Display
What shows on the floor plan: room names, areas, measurements, materials, and window light rays are on by default. Three that are off by default and worth turning on when you're planning carpet: Show Rug Measurements, Show Seam Lines, and Show Cut/Fill Strip Numbers.
Materials
Set the area unit per material type (carpet defaults to square yards), and the defaults for new broadloom: waste per cut, width variance, selvedge. Show Advanced Roll Specifications controls whether those appear in the material editor.
Support
Email support, this website, the privacy policy and terms, plus Export Current Job and Sync Diagnostics for troubleshooting.
iCloud, backups & unlocking
Sync
Jobs sync through your own iCloud account across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. There's no account to make and no login. The status line at the bottom of the job list tells you where things stand — "Last sync 3:42 PM", "Syncing with iCloud…", or "iCloud unavailable".
If iCloud isn't reachable, Floored keeps working from on-device storage and shows a Using local data banner. Your work is safe; only cross-device syncing pauses. Relaunch once you're back online and it picks up. If two devices ever disagree, check Settings ▸ Support ▸ Sync Diagnostics first.
Sending a job to support
Settings ▸ Support ▸ Export Current Job writes a .flooredjob file with everything in that job — measurements, materials, notes, and photos. That's the fastest way for us to reproduce a problem. It contains customer details, so only send it to support.
Free vs. Floored Pro
Everything in the app works on the free tier — drawing, scanning, materials, estimates, cut sheets, printing, sync — for up to 2 saved jobs, archived ones included. Floored Pro is a one-time $34.99 purchase that removes the job limit. No subscription, and no features are held back behind it.
New device? Tap Restore Purchases on the paywall or in Settings ▸ Account, signed into the Apple ID you bought with.
If something seems wrong
- My drag just moves the whole canvas.
- Tap to select the room, wall, or corner first, then drag.
- I can't find the Door/Window/Rug tools.
- They only appear once the room is closed and you're in Edit mode. Close the shape first.
- The room won't save.
- Open the Checklist and tap Done — that's what saves a new hand-drawn room by default. You can turn that requirement off in Settings ▸ General.
- My labels and measurements vanished.
- You're zoomed out past the Overview threshold, or the room is small on screen. Zoom in.
- The room stretches the wrong direction when I set a wall length.
- Check the Adjusts from end / start caption and tap Reverse.
- A wall won't accept a new length.
- It's locked, or a locked neighbour is constraining it. Unlock it.
- My carpet estimate looks short.
- Three usual causes: the pattern repeat wasn't entered on the material, a room has no material assigned (look for the orange badge), or a floor is set to Exclude from Estimate.
- My stair numbers look way off.
- Tread + Riser is one measurement covering the carpet's whole path over a step, including nosing — not just the tread.
- I deleted a job by mistake.
- Deletion is permanent and syncs to your other devices. Use Archive instead of deleting when a job is just finished.
- A roll I added disappeared.
- Rolls saved with no length are dropped. Re-add it and enter a length.
- The app won't respond to any button.
- Help Mode is probably on. Tap the ? to turn it off.
